CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago officials say that the city is getting nearly $1 million in federal grants for community mental health and substance abuse centers to add routine HIV testing and counseling.

The Chicago Department of Public Health announced the funding on Sunday.

A public health commissioner says that incorporating HIV testing and treatment is a critical way to enhance overall infrastructure.

The funding comes from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration. Officials say the funding is a step toward reforming and expanding mental health services in Chicago to provide more care for patients in all city neighborhoods.

The funding follows $500,000 in city funding for community mental health centers to increase psychiatric services.
